Open house was run differently this year to encourage more of a sense of community, and it was very successful. While parents were meeting with their children’s teachers, student were engaged in various activities such as read alouds and STEM activities. Heights recently had a scheduled fire drill. There is another scheduled fire drill at some point in October. Photo day was a successful day. There is a possible field trip this Thursday for Kindergartners, depending on chaperone availability.
All the staff at all three elementary schools are reading “Being the Change: Lessons and Strategies to Teach Social Comprehension” by Sara K. Ahmed.
Mrs. Lamore also discussed Mrs. Mellman’s proposal of creating a mural on the outside of the Heights building on the South Main St side. Mrs. Mellman would like this mural to involve the entire Heights community. Mrs. Mellman is very excited about this project. Mrs. Mellman has secured some funding and will be working with PTO and school to secure further funding. Mrs. Lamore showed examples of artwork gifts/fundraiser that can be purchased as part of the fundraising. Information will be going home with students about this. Mrs. Mellman plans to complete this mural during the 2020/2021 school year.

PTO Chair report- Manjula Riley
PTO calendar has had many events thus far, including two kindergarten playdates and a picnic at the playground event. The PTO has many events planned for this year. We have a great new website (heightsptosharon.org) that has all events listed. The PTO is always in need of volunteers for whatever anyone is able to do.
The PTO is planning a winter event, which might be a dance. The PTO is looking for volunteers for this event.
Michelle McMarthy is taking over the Garden Committee/Garden Fund. The teachers noticed that the garden needed some work. Melissa is aware of this and is excited to work on the garden for the school.
A new shipment of Heights Gear is coming in. Rebecca and Michelle have been doing a great job with this committee. Heights Gear will be sold at school events. Due to the vendor the PTO uses, families cannot order online anytime. However, the PTO might do a 2 week online drive at some point, and will let families know.
Boxtops store is coming back, there is a new volunteer taking over. Kids historically get a prize for each sheet they bring in. There was discussion of reducing the amount of “stuff” that kids get, or possibly using donated items for prizes.
The K/1st grade pizza party is coming up in a few weeks. The Spirit Committee is helping by bringing in sports entertainment. Some of the Sharon High school students who are on sports teams will be in attendance that night to help. Pizza Party is only $1 per slice, families do not have to pay for anything else.
The PTO is planning a movie night for next year, popcorn will be sold for 25 cents.
The Ice Cream Social, Silent Auction and Raffle are all planning for the Spring. The PTO is looking for volunteers and new ideas for this event.
Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
